Pondicherry Engineering College was established in the year 1984 under the VII Five Year Plan with liberal seed grant from MHRD, Government of India.. Pondicherry Engineering college is a Premiere Institute in the southern part of India. It is located on the shores of Bay of Bengal in the picturesque East Coast Road connecting Pondicherry and Chennai.

The college offers eight undergraduate and thirteen post-graduate courses, apart from M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. The post–graduate programmes are under the Choice Based Credit Systems (CBSCS). The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of AICTE had accredited all the 8 under graduate courses. It is recognized Minor Quality Improvement Programme Centre for Research. The campus sprawling over 186 acres is decorated with lawns and gardens besides spacious play grounds. A central library with over 50000 books, 72 national journals, 98 internal journals, DELNET, MALIBNJET and INDEST facility are available for use of staff and students. The campus houses residential quarters for faculty and staff and separate hostels for male and female students. Besides these a well furnished guest house and a well equipped dispensary are available. The campus also provides other facilities like bank, ATM, Canteen, Shopping complex, Gym center, Open air theater and an Air conditioned auditorium complex. A well planned fiber-optical campus network with 12 MBPS leased line Internet connectivity and 100Mbps NKN are available in the campus. PEC has been a prolific recipient of research funding from the Indian government agencies including MHRD, DST, CSIR, DOE, MOEF, MICT, MNES,DIT etc., through several research projects undertaken by the faculty. PEC has been selected by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India to receive Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), phases II grants.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Pondicherry Engineering College has 24 highly qualified faculty. The Department offers one Undergraduate course, Two specialized Post Graduate Programmes in Distributed computing Systems and Information Security, Master of Computer Applications and is a recognized research centre. The faculty has rich research experience in fields like Semantic technologies, Social Network Analysis, Agent Technology, Wireless Sensor Networks, Parallel & Distributed Systems, Web Services, Software Architecture and Extreme Programming.
